Open the Music is a performing arts project whose mission is to open the doors of high-quality, live music which have been closed to historically underserved audiences and artists.
We believe all communities - those of color, those of low economic status, those who live in musical deserts and all others - deserve an equitable opportunity to experience, either as an audience member or as an artist, the transformative power of high quality, live music.
Open the Music was established by Brenda Marie Turner, soprano and CFRE, to provide
a solution to the challenge of equity in the arts. We aim to remove barriers that have historically hindered both audience members and artists from creating and experiencing high quality, live music. We do this in four ways:
1. Present free, private performances to under-resourced communities, such as homeless shelters, prisons, nursing homes, and other like organizations.
2. Present free and ticketed public performances of diverse music - from opera to musical theater, gospel to jazz - in both traditional and non-traditional spaces. Learn about Sing Out! A Tour for Harmony
3. Create paid opportunities for talented musicians using a two-step process, which prioritizes talent over appearance, allowing greater opportunity for diversity in all its forms.
4. Provide free and/or deeply discounted arts administration services to nonprofit performing arts organizations, aiding them in Opening the Music in their communities.
